2025 Top Prospect Lists

MLB updated its Top 100 list. Brice Matthews has cracked the top 100 MLB prospects, coming in at #98, but he’s the sole Houston farmhand on the list.

I think Fangraphs should have their updated Astros-specific prospect list out either this week or next.

It would be interesting to evaluate MLB rookies per team over the last 5 or so years by WAR or something. Even though the Astros farm system is ranked usually in the 28 - 30 range, I suspect that the actual value at the MLB level of players coming out of the system is much, much higher.

I might sic a deep research chatbot on that task.

If you do that, I’d be really interested to learn how you did it.

Ditto. If there’s a tool that can swing a search along the lines of “cumulative WAR per team by each team’s homegrown players aged 26 and under” that would be really cool. I know Baseball America has done somewhat regular articles on this in the past, and as you’d expect, for many years the Astros have outperformed their farm system rank.

Limited data but here [is an article that shows how the playoff teams were built from Oct of 24.](How the 2024 MLB Playoff teams were built)

Astros have the highest homegrown percentage out of the bunch.

As did Baseball America, who also have Matthews at 98.
