2024 MLB Draft

Excellent news regarding Powell! Feels like a good draft. I’m excited to see how these players grow in coming years.

If there is one immutable rule I live by, it is this:
Never do math in public.

Great news about Powell and Forcucci. This felt like a very safe draft (for understandable and obvious reasons). But these two seem like the two picks with the highest potential upside.

The Astros finished all their signings a few days ago (inking all but the 20th rounder McGary), but a couple of teams appear to have whiffed on high-round picks as tomorrow’s deadline approaches:

  • Tyler Bell (Rays, 2nd round) heading to Kentucky
  • Ryan Prager (Angels, 3rd round) returning to A&M

Both players have announced they’ll be off/back to school. There are usually a few players in the top ten rounds who don’t sign, but these days it’s a surprise to see a team whiff on anyone in rounds 1-3. Rays and Angels really screwed up by not nailing down signability before these picks.

There are a few more guys through round 10 who probably won’t sign either (including UH RHP Jaxon Jelkin, Mets 9th rounder), but that’s more in line with recent history.

Nothing like some video of our future Asheville Tourist OF playing LB at Oregon:

[Oregon LB Bryce Boettcher (#28) is extremely interesting… former defensive back who has also been an outfielder for the Ducks baseball team.

Super smooth at 6-2 and 225 pounds. Leads Oregon with 32 total tackles. Also has an interception and four pass breakups.](x.com)

Well, crap. Looks like Boettcher won’t be playing baseball any time soon.

Nope. Makes me wonder…you think he’s been told he’ll be collecting some NIL $$$ for next season? This is different because it’s football, but I’ve been reading a bit where it is potentially going to be much harder for MLB to compete in terms of getting kids to sign when drafted out of HS.

NIL + more baseball scholarships are going to make NCAA a higher level of baseball. While it will reduce HS kids signing, it will also better prepare payers drafted out of college better than in the past. I expect more players jumping from college to MLB within a year of the draft than before. I also expect it will impact minor league baseball quality at the lower levels. There might even be more contraction down the road to just one level of A ball.
