Pretty interesting news out of the AFL - a team can challenge a check swing:
Looks like the first ever checked swing review was called for by former Astros farmhand Drew Gilbert, and the third base ump’s “swing” call was overturned.
I’d be curious to know how the computer is programmed to draw the line between swing and no-swing. From that video, I’d guess it’s whether the bat breaks the plane of the front of the plate. I know they experimented in the minors with an explicit “wrist rolling over” rule, but that would seem a lot harder to implement in an automated system.
Astros Farm Hands spending time in the desert this year include:
Jose Fleury RHP
Joey Mancini RHP
Alex Santos RHP
Nic Swanson RHP
Alejandro Torres RHP
Colin Price C
Austin Deming 3B
Quincy Hamilton OF
Santos has been doing well from what I’ve read
Small sample size but in 5 1/3 innings, he has K’d 10, allowing 3 hits and 3 BBs. The K numbers are significatly higher than his track record over 4 years in the minors.
Season ending update - all still too small of a sample size to take too much from but here they are:
Jose Fleury RHP 5 games/ 3 starts 12 IP/14 H/9 R/ 8 ER/ 3HR/ 5 BB /10K 6.00 ERA
Joey Mancini RHP 7G/ 7 2/3 IP/ 13 H/ 9 R/ER / 1 HR/ 5 BB / 8 Ks / 10.57 ERA
