2024-25 offseason

I do wish that MLB had some system where players could actually get paid what they are worth when they are worth it.

There is that system. Performance bonuses. I don’t think the MLBPA is for that when it is at the expense of salary.

The CBA does not allow performance bonuses based on stats. Just appearances or awards.

You can not give a player $1M bonus for 100 RBI or 40 HR

You can based on G/PAs or G/IP but not based on what the results are unless its for an award, not the stat itself.

Padres signed Jason Heyward. Good Astro, however briefly.

I don’t think he was saying you could do that now. He’s saying that if the MLBPA were interested in players “getting paid what they’re worth” while they’re actually doing it, they could negotiate a CBA that allows a system of bonuses that would allow it. That they haven’t done so in the many opportunities they have had suggests that other things are more important to them (e.g., guaranteed contracts that insure against injury risk).

Players are not interested in getting paid what they’re worth, they’re interested in getting paid as much as they can. Those two number are often very far apart.

I just don’t understand these people sometimes. Bregman’s employer has paid him well and has agreed to continue to pay him well so that for 15 years of employment, he would receive over a quarter of a billion dollars ($263M). I will never understand that type of reticence.

Cubs may be losing interest in Bregman. Or, negotiating well…

" Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer addressed the possibility of Bregman joining the team in 2025. “Unclear. I think you always look for opportunities, but right now, we’re going to focus on the guys we have in camp. That’s the plan,” Hoyer said."

Astros sign Luis Guillorme. Really good glove at 2B and 3B but atrocious bat. Was league average in 2022 but since then has slashed .213/.295/.296

Bregman reportedly to sign with Red Sox. 3 years, $120M with opt outs after each season. He ended up doing pretty damn good if reports are true.

Good for him. We can finally say goodbye.

Yeah, if he got $40M/yr he did good. I’m not crying over it. He will do good in that park too. Always has. Now, let’s go Astros!! I’m ready for some baseball.

I was going to consider it a win either way. Happy to have him if he re-signed and happy to let him go if he didn’t.

For the best, imo.

Happy for Bregman. Great Astro and appreciate everything he did for the team while he was here. He deserves his pay day but I feel like he’s going to be in the exact same place next year.

He did really well for himself as Boston caved at the last minute. 40M in annual salary and a great park for him to hit in. Now, it’s time for Brown and company to figure out how to upgrade the outfield.

I wish Bregman all the best, except when he plays the Astros.

Feinsand is reporting that Bregman had offers of 6 years and over $170M, but opted for the higher AAV.

Detroit and Toronto were reported to have offers in that range, with the Astros likely coming in around 160-165 million after increasing their offer last week.

He’s not opting out of a $40M annual salary.

The Astros just dodged a huge bullet. $40MM per for a 7 hole hitter. Wow.
