I think he will if its the best offer he gets - and right mow, I think it is.
Astros = 6/$156M
Detroit =6yrs / unknown amount. Detroit’s home park will significantly retard Alex’s hitting numbers. Skubal will be a FA after 2026 and Detroit historically only competes in short windows. I think they need to be much higherbthan Astros’ offer to compensate.
Toronto= unknown but rumored to be 6 yrs and higher than Astros’ offer. Toronto has Vladdy and Bichette both FA after the season. Lots of uncertainty long term. Canadian taxes could also impact value of offer.
Red Sox= reportedly won’t go over 4 years and wantvto move him to 2b.
Cubs= reportedly won’t go over 4 years.
No other teams currently known to have interest.
I still think Astros are best until more gets put on the table
There is a report out from Ari Alexander that the Astros have “improved their initial offer” to Bregman. The two sources tell KPRC 2 however that this offer is unlikely to lead to a deal.
I’ve been thinking all along that I’d offer him 6 @ $162M and tell him to take it or leave. He has nothing better. This is an increase in the AAV of $1M so he can save face. If he won’t take that, he doesn’t want to play for us.
If Bregman goes elsewhere/turns down Houston, it’s because he wants different scenery for whatever reason. He’s fucking himself but it’s been done before.
The bottom line is I don’t care how much they pay him and I am happy for him to get as much as he can because its not my money.
I just want him back.
If he’s an Astro for $60M I’m happier than if he’s anywhere else whether its for $10M or $100M
Now if they start adding additional years thats when I will start caring.
I think he should be fun to root for, watch play, and help the team win for another 6-8 years. Every year they add increases the risk of him having a career ending injury or Abreu-like regression that prevents a new generation player from getting a chance.
Point of order: Ari’s tweet quotes two sources saying the Astros have improved their offer, but only one source saying it’s unlikely to get the deal done. (I’m betting we can guess which side that source is on.)
I’m with you HH. That’s why I wanted the Astros to trade him during spring training last year and get some value like we did with Tucker this year. I am perfectly happy going to camp just like we are. I think we have a good team whose pitching, specifically the rotation, is going to be even better than most think…and we potentially have some reinforcements coming with Javier, Garcia and others. I’d say that in our ballpark, there is a very good chance that Paredes returns to something close to his all-star season two years ago and Walker is going to be a huge upgrade offensively. Let’s play ball!!
Since 2017 he has been my favorite player. I know he isn’t an MVP contender but I enjoy watching and rooting for him.
And I think he plays the game th right way, is fundamentally sound, and does everything he can on the field and off to win.
It would not surprise me if he never makes another all star team but I hope he does.
I just want to keep hearing stories about him helping teammmates improve, and watching him throw runners out at home on infield choppers as long as I can.
The best strategy for the Astros’ competitiveness over the next five or six years is to reset the tax penalties in 2025, then go hog wild in 2026 and beyond with the freedom that affords. Can’t do that if they sign Bregman.
There is no doubt that they will reset the CBT in either 2025 or 2026.
The issue I have with the Astros saving money in order to spend later is that they won’t have any chance to get a top tier FA.
They will continue to sign the Christian Walkers and Michael Brantleys who are very good players but either entering their mid 30s or have injury or some other risk preventing him from being a likely MVP contender and therefore limiting their market.
Why hoard a bunch of money and then not be willing to offer deals to the top FAs that other teams do?
The players they do sign can be good but not the type you look as franchise changers, so why is gathering the payroll space a big deal?
