I can’t ever do that, been injured injured too many times myself.
I can root for total failure though.

Bruised and battered egos. Crushed Yankeesfan hearts. Damaged NYC/NJ media psyches.
The Yankees, that’s who. And I hope they do.
I immediately assumed he wants to come back to the Astros.
Bregman wins Gold Glove.
I heard official offer to Bregman is 6yrs, $156M
I doubt this will even get a return phone call. Nothing less than $200MM will even get a thought.
Barely above Chapman, but a fair opening offer.
Not immediately. But Boras has had to come crawling back to teams an awful lot the past few years.
Athletic is projecting his value at 7 yrs/189
They also have the following other value projections:
JV 1 @ 12
Christian Walker 2/44
Kikuchi - 3/63
Of course value is really determined by what someone is willing to pay.
Maybe. We’ll see what the market is, but I’m guessing Boras has spread the word that the bidding starts at 6/$210MM. Word is the Cubs are ready to back up the armored truck.
Wow. Hope Bregman likes giardiniera.
Paying someone like Bregman 6/$210MM would be totally on brand for the Cubs. And, the results would be equally on brand for moves like that they’ve done in the past.
It would really be too bad if that were to happen, only because the Cubs are of no consequence. I’d much rather that somebody of consequence damage their payroll flexibility with that deal.
Pretty small delta between 6/$156m and 7/$189m. Age 31-37 and 31-38 is not really a material difference when it comes to overall risk. Especially since Bregman seems to keep himself in pretty good shape.
I’d sign JV to 1/$12m in a heartbeat. No opinion on Walker. It would be interesting to see what the Kikuchi estimates were prior to his short tenure with the Astros last year. We know he was good for the Astros. I suspect that short 3 months may have doubled his value.
My concern is not him staying healthy or being out of shape, it’s his inevitable decline in skill. Prime career Bregman is a .260/.320/.450 hitter with 20 HR and 80 RBI. 33-38 year old Bregman figures to be measurably less productive. Is that worth a long-term $30MM/yr contract? Not to me it isn’t. It isn’t my money, and I really don’t care how much they pay him as long as it doesn’t impact others. I just don’t want them to give him $30-32MM/year then cry that they may not be able to afford Tucker.
I agree with this but think Tucker is gone regardless.
The nature of FA is for contracts to have excess value at the beginning and negative value at the end.
I’m afraid Altuve may end up being another poster boy for this. But as an Astro and Hoyston icon, they decided it was worth it.
The trick is to decide which players are worth the risk, provide enough on field value along with off field value, and have young cheap star players (especially later) to keep the overall team payroll within budget.
I think Bregman fits this but would not go over 7yrs or $200M.

I don’t know why you think Tucker is gone regardless, you may have insight, but I don’t know that it’s a foregone conclusion.
Yes, the nature of free agency is to overpay in the future for past production. Which is why giving $200MM to Breman makes zero sense to me. At that price, he provides negative “value” on the field, and he’s not in the same “gotta keep him an Astros for life” tier as Altuve.
But I get it…others value Bregman more than I do.
Ari Alexander at KPRC says the Pirates claimed Trey Cabbage. So long, Astros legend.
