You guys impress the shit out of me because frankly I want to tar and feather Mr. Crane and take him out to the King Ranch to dry. Hope to be proven wrong yet again.
For me, it all depends on what Brown does the remainder of the offseason. If he can trade Pressly for help in either the outfield or first base (Cedric Mullins or Ryan Mountcastle in Baltimore or Starling Marte with the Mets, as examples) and sign one of Bregman, Christian Walker, Pete Alonso, Anthony Santander or Teoscar Hernandez, the Astros will still be really good. Fail to sign one of the big free agent hitters remaining, and I’ll feel differently.
Right now that makes sense. They have Framber (for now), Brown, Blanco and Arrighetti. Who knows how Garcia will look in Spring Training, and you can’t count on anything from McCullers.
I don’t claim to have any connections. I’m not getting any exclusive information
But…
My buddy is a scout for the Marlins. He’s a Cubs fan. He thinks this was a mutually beneficial trade. There’s both “immediate needs filled for the Astros” and “an a-list prospect that the Astro organization lacks at the moment”.
I do not lament the trade. Tucker had many opportunities to extend, and he appeared to not be interested. He was not going to sign with Houston and was going to walk away like Springer, Correa, and the ever-cursed Cole. I applaud the trade and hope the guys coming back will help the winning continue. I am glad he did not go to NYY.
I am not going to miss Tucker. As I have said, his public persona seemed to me to be aloof and disinterested. I probably am wrong about him, but I did not feel as strongly about keeping him him as I did about the above-mentioned ex-pats.
There were times that Tucker didn’t look as if he was giving his all out on the field. That always bothered me. I have no doubt that Crane and Brown tried to extend his contract. Money and greed are the reasons that he was traded. I did not like seeing him leave as he was a very good player but at least we didn’t have to see him walk for nothing like Springer, Cole, Keuchel and Correa. I hope we don’t have to add Bregman to that list.
Regardless of whose decision it was to let Springer, Correa and Cole play out their final year a walk away, the Astros could somewhat afford to let them go for draft pick compensation at that time. We no longer have the talent in the system to allow that to happen. That is the biggest reason why this move had to be made with Tucker It’s the same reason why it needs to be done with Valdez if they determine they can’t sign him.
I think it’s mostly Tucker’s reserved personality. He’s just not a rah-rah kind of guy or a guy who is comfortable being out front. Frankly, we probably would have thought the same of Jeff Bagwell had the times been the same. That’s just my opinion, of course.
I agree with that. He doesn’t do “hustle face” on the field and isn’t outspoken, but it doesn’t mean he doesn’t give it his all. I think it does have something to do with why some of us don’t feel as connected to him, but it’s not really a knock on him.
