2024-25 offseason

My magic 8 ball says: “Ask again later.”

Age 31-36 Biggio is the ceiling for age 31-36 Bregman, IMO, mostly because Biggio put up such huge numbers at ages 31-33 (1997-1999) that Bregman is extremely unlikely to match. The tail end of Bregman’s span might be better than Biggio’s, but it might not be.

The Astros are receiving trade inquiries on Kyle Tucker, and Dana didn’t completely slam the door on the idea:

It might not be a bad idea to see what Tucker could bring in a trade. Tucker will only be 28 when he is a free agent and I would imagine that he will have plenty of teams offering 10+ years and a crazy amount of money in a contract. I don’t see any scenario where Crane offers a 10 year contract to anyone. I don’t like it but if Tucker could bring in a nice haul of young talent, it might be worth looking at as opposed to letting him walk after next season.

I don’t like it either but the thought of getting zippo for both him and Framber after this season given the teams situation is sickening.

If you’re willing to move him, his value will never be higher than right after teams missed out on Soto.

Trading Kyle would actually make me feel better about re-signing Bregman, weirdly enough. Not a teardown, not all-in, just getting what they can while they can.

I have been warming up to it (idea of trading one or both) for a couple weeks now. If you do it you gotta hit on most of what you get back but that is supposed to be Dana’s strong suit.

I wonder how long it will take JCrane to succumb to, and finally agree to match, league contracts that are being offered to his free agents during his reign. If he doesn’t make a/some minor adjustment(s) to his approach, maybe Winter is coming.

That’s a concern for sure, but the golden years weren’t built on free agency, and they always managed to make good additions without buying at the top of the market. The bigger concern is making sure they’ve got a solid foundation built from within so they can add those supplemental pieces through free agency.

You can’t say “the window never closes” and let every single FA walk.

Oddly enough, trading Tucker would make me feel better even if they don’t resign Bregman because it would mean that both didn’t simply walk.

They haven’t, and they’re running a payroll right at or over the luxury tax line. They’ve done a good job extending their core guys and delaying their free agency (which is why Bregman was still around this season to begin with). They’ve seen Cole, Springer, and Correa depart in FA, Morton too if you want to count him. They’ve extended/signed Altuve, Yordan, Verlander, Bregman, Pressly, re-upped Brantley til his body gave out, etc. That’s not a bad batting average.

Speaking of players the Astros didn’t extend, sounds like Carlos Correa might be on the move this winter. He had a really good (half) season in 2024 when he was able to take the field.

This right here should be an IQ test question …

… a full no-trade clause, meaning that he would have to approve of any deal that shipped him out of Minnesota.

Why would anyone NOT approve ANY deal that allows them to move out of Minnesota?

As long as it was only May-September, I could live in Minnesota.

Little chance it would extend into October.

So … very early spring through late fall, then? I do not want to live anywhere where the distinction between the first snowfall of the year and the last is in any way ambiguous.

ETA – It wasn’t Minnesota, but I did get snowed on in early August one year while camping, and nobody knew whether it was the first or last snowfall of the year.

¿ porque no los dos?

The Golden Years were built on very early draft picks due to their poor record during Luhnow’s rebuilding.
