2023 Roster

Roster currently sits at 34 (20 pitchers, 14 position players).

Key upcoming dates:

November 15–Roster must be finalized ahead of next month’s Rule 5 draft

Possible additions (6):
RHP Jayden Murray (MLBP #12, BA #18)
SS Christian Gonzalez (MLBP #17, BA #26)
OF Jordan Brewer (BA #27)
OF Corey Julks (MLBP #30)
OF/1B Scott Schreiber (Arizona Fall League standout)
RHP Matt Ruppenthal (Arizona Fall League standout)

Note: rankings per MLB Pipeline (MLBP) or Baseball America (BA)

None of the guys listed are slam dunks to be added (most are in fact longshots). I’ll guess Murray and Julks get added.

November 18–Non-tender deadline

Possible subtractions (7):
Brandon Bielak
Ronel Blanco
Mauricio Dubon
Josh James
Parker Mushinski
Enoli Paredes
Blake Taylor

Half or more of these guys probably get retained

December 7–Rule 5 draft

A number of guys left the org as minor league free agents the past few days including 2 with past MLB service time–Alex De Goti and most notably Andre Scrubb.

Among the others: pitchers Nick Hernandez (ex-Coog who was an 8th rounder back in '16), Chad Donato (11th rounder, '16), Colin McKee (18th rounder, '16), Angel Bravo and Freylin Garcia and catcher Scott Manea (came from the Mets in the JD Davis trade).

Man, I had forgotten Scrubb.

Now at 35 (21 pitchers, 14 position players) with the Montero deal becoming official today.

Waiting to see which of the Rule 5 eligible guys get added.

Pitcher JP France being added to 40-man.

Lots of Ks for Sugar Land this past season but also lots of walks–136 vs 51 in 110 IP.

Was Rule 5 eligible last year and obviously did not get selected.

Roster at 36 (22 pitchers, 14 position players).

Split time with the Red Sox and Twins last year. Waived by the Sox late in the year and picked up by Minnesota.

As Kevin Goldstein once described Wesley Wright, Davis looks like “a lefty situational arm who can miss bats and the strike zone with equal aplomb.”

A kitchen sink repertoire as described by BA:

France’s fastball sits 91-94 mph with riding cut and a flat vertical approach angle. His primary secondaries are a mid-80s cutter and low-80s sweeping slider, but he’ll mix in a mid-70s curveball with depth in lieu of either at times. His fifth pitch is a low-80s changeup that mimics the shape of his fastball It had the lowest usage rate of his four secondaries but is still a primary part of his arsenal.

Chandler Rome reporting Josh James will be non-tendered.

It’s a damn shame, but not surprising

Had to happen, I guess. He was a good story for awhile, but injuries robbed him of great potential.

Astros PR confirming the non-tender of James.

Roster currently at 35 (21 pitchers, 14 position players).

Ah, Stanek. I mistakenly thought he was on a one year deal in 3022. Maybe Taylor can be the LHP some of us wanted.

I was really hoping James would work out. Such talent and promise.

I thought Bielak was arb eligible.

Off by a year
