Good grief. I have learned in the last two days about the deaths of two people who were once close friends. Neither was a tragedy in the sense of a shooting or an accident, but both are personal reminders of our mortality.
This hits hard. I had a tabletop hockey game as a kid ā back when there were six teams. Both the Golden Jet and the Pocket Rocket featured heavily in my fantasy radio commentaries on the game, and both have now made an appearance on this list.
He was the first NHL star player to move to the WHA. The Winnipeg Jets were (I think) named for him.
RIP, Golden Jet.
Sorry to hear that Jim.
I learned this weekend of the deaths of two former high school classmates. It always hits home, especially when itās ones we are/were close to. Sorry to hear about your friends.
I was curious so I went looking and found this:
The original Winnipeg Jets were given their name by their owner, Ben Hatskin, who was reportedly a huge NFL New York Jets fan. The Jets first took the ice in 1972, right about the time that Joe Namathās Jets were one of footballās hottest commodities. Likewise, Winnipeg serves as a primary hub for the Royal Canadian Air Force.
They were not currently in my life, but they once were. More grim reminders of mortality and the passage of time.
So it was a happy accident. Maybe even better.
I had that game too but mine just had the Bruins and Rangers as the teams.
Mine actually had the Maple Leafs & Canadiens, but I built a league ā played 2-minute periods against my dad and seasons made up of home-and-home matchups. And, of course, we had to use the real player names! I had the wings, hawks & leafs. My dad had the bruins, rangers and āworld champion Canadiensā ā so Maurice was my nemesis and my champions included Hull & Howe.
I still have the game (though a bit worse for wear and tear). Played a few games with my grandson over Christmas, though I think he prefers FIFA.
She was amazing as the Borg Queen.
