A further group of players were also released (had been playing at the two Villes)…
RHP Danny Cody
OF Cody Orr
OF/1B Victor Mascai
INF Yeuris Ramirez
OF Rainier Rivas
The most notable here was Ramirez who signed for $500K out of the Dominican back in the 2015-2016 period. Cody was a 17th rounder ('19) who signed for $1K out of Baldwin-Wallace while Orr was a NDFA in '20 who signed for $20K out of Tiffin U. Mascai was an IFA out of Brazil who inked for $100K in the 2017-2018 period. Rivas came from the Angels in the Max Stassi trade along with Raider Uceta (who was released last year).
Danny Cody (age 25) was repeating at Asheville, where he finished to 19 games (6 saves); he also walked 33 and struck out 28 on 36 IP.
At Fayetteville, the emphasis is apparently on versatility, so “regular” is a pretty arbitrary term (except for SS). That said, Cody Orr (age 24) was the “regular” at 3B with substantial time at 2B, CF & RF. He slashed .192/.313/.249 with 90 K in 310 PA. Victor Mascai (age 21) was the regular at 1B, slashing .216/.331/.407 with 80 K in 242 PA. Yeuris Ramirez (age 23) was the regular at 2B with substantial time at 3B, slashing .199/.311/.319 with 97 K in 254 PA. And Rainier Rivas (21) got a late start before becoming the regular in LF where he slashed .152/.199/.261 with 52 K in 146 PA.
I am eager to see how the new guys do in their stead.
These guys also got their shots. Cooper slashed .086/.221/.086, striking out 27 times in 68 PA for the Orange squad as the regular in LF before being sent “down” to Blue. Payano struggled with the Orange squad (mostly at 2B) before being demoted to Blue, where he also played 3B, RF & LF, slashing .237/.317/.290 with 41 K in 104 combined PA. Urdaneta was the “regular” at 2B for Orange, also appearing everywhere else but RF & C. He also had cameo appearances in Corpus Christi & Sugar Land. He spent 2021 in Fayetteville, where he was similarly versatile and similarly futile at the plate (.155/.340/.191 in 2022 vs. .229/.327/.358 in 2021). He is unscored upon as a pitcher, though he did walk 25% of the batters he faced (8) in two years.
Meanwhile, Hiraldo also played most of 2021 at Fayetteville before splitting time between the Blue & Orange squads this year. For his two-year career, he has walked 43 and struck out 48 in 52 IP, giving him a WHIP of about 1.8.
Looks like Franklin Barreto got his walking papers, too. 73 games at Sugar Land at 2B/SS/3B with an unimpressive .162/.259/.274 slash line and 102 K in 274 PA. This was the guy that Enmanuel Valdez was taking PT from before the trade.
Referenced in another thread but Lewis Brinson went to the Giants with cash coming back.
No, you’re not going to net a prospect or even a body for someone like Brinson who was signed as a minor league free agent last offseason and would again be a minor league free agent this offseason had he remained with the Astros.
