2022 Arizona Fall League

AFL championship game to be televised tonight on MLB Network and MLB TV.

8 ET/7 CT.

The Saguaros are the 2022 AFL champions with 4 Astros instrumental in the 7-6 win.

Very nice job tonight by Colton Gordon who got the start: 4.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K. The only run allowed came on a solo shot. Combined with his regular season stats he was 24 K/5 BB in 22.2 IP in the AFL with 23 hits allowed. Not bad at all against a bunch of high-level hitters.

Matt Ruppenthal came on in relief in the 6th and retired the only two hitters he faced (one on a K). His AFL stats including the regular season: 11 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 16 K. Dan O’Dowd on the broadcast suggested he was someone who might get popped in the Rule 5.

The box score says Will Wagner (hitting 3rd for Surprise) went 2-6 but his first hit was a soft GB that should have been fielded by the shortstop. In B11, he an oppo LD single to LF that scored the ghost runner to tie the score at 6 apiece. Made a couple of nice plays at 3B but no real opportunity to show off what kind of arm he has.

Scott Schreiber played 1B and hit cleanup and reached 4 times in 6 trips, twice on walks. His first hit was a GB single to the right side that was hard hit but arguably should have been fielded by the 1B. In the 11th and with Wagner on 2nd (advanced there on the throw home on his run-scoring hit), drove a ball into the left CF gap for the game-winner. In the field his only notable play was on the wrong side of the ledger, failing to catch a pop-up down the RF line.
