LaMarr Hoyt
Bob Dole, 89.
Saw Sly and Robbie with Sinead OāConnor in the early aughtsā¦the groove was hypnotic.
Mike Nesmith. Fuckā¦
Was my favorite Monkee. Probably had as much to do with him being a Texan as anything else.
The fact that you had a āfavorite Monkeeā explains a lot.
Mine too, and the best musician of the lot.
RIP
I was in their fan club in the 5th grade. I remember around that time when my neighbor, James, told me that the Monkees made bubblegum music for teenyboppers and that all the cool guys listened to bands that did psychedelic drug songs like the Rolling Stones or the Byrds. Really opened my ears up.
Didnāt the Monkees have a psychedelic period of songs?
They kind of did but not really. And there was the movie they did, Head. Directed by Bob Rafelson and written by Jack Nicholson. There was definitely some trippy shit going on in that. Also Mickey talked about doing acid with John Lennon.
They were all plastic and marketing before that was a thing. Any psychedelic involvement was for image purposes. And their music sucked.
But they had trading cards. I still have a bunch.
Who was (is) your favorite Byrd?
I never really thought about that. Favorite Byrd? I donāt know. Roger always stood out the most.
McGuinn was the only constant. Who else could it be? Gene Clark? Michael Clarke? Chris Hillman?
Gramm Parsons for his solid contributions on Sweetheart? BTWā¦just saw Chris Hillman a couple of weeks ago in Temple, Texas playing before a throng of maybe 100 of us geezers. He did not play anything from or even acknowledge he was ever affiliated with The Byrds. I realize he did a lot of other stuff (Manassas, Flying Burrito Bros., Desert Rose Band) but he would never been heard of if not for The Byrds. Folks came and went from The Byrds but it was McGuinnās band.
I went to a Monkees reunion concert years ago (suck it, VB), and before the concert I saw a familiar face. Before me stood Peter Bay, Conductor of the Austin Symphony Orchestra. He is a musical genius, imo.
āMaestro,ā says I. āWhat brings you to a Monkees concert?ā āI love the Monkees,ā says Peter Bay. It aināt just Sphinx. It also is Jim and Maestro Bay.
Byrds arenāt real.
