What are you eating?

That’s where I was prior to the Lee Brothers.

Savory cornbread…with jalapeños, please.

I love shrimp and I love grits, but just the thought of eating them together turns my stomach. It’s up there with oyster ice cream.

Your loss.

Shrimp and grits are fantastic.

When I was a shrimper in the Gulf, shrimp and grits was a common breakfast. After pulling nets, heading out the pile, and icing the tails it’s time for a big breakfast, and shrimp were plentiful.

Whatever makes you happy, Forrest.

One of the many, many understated jokes in “Local Hero” was when the visiting Houston oil executive asked a Scottish lobster fisherman if the lobster was good, and he replied [Heavy Scottish Accent] “Oh, I’ve never had it…too expensive.”

Local Hero is such a good movie.

Depending on the chef I would totally be up for trying oyster ice cream.

I love oysters, but OMG, no!

It used to be a big thing in early 19th century America, but…no. I’m not a fan of savory ice creams, in general, so…not just no, hell no.

That’s up there with my parents’ tradition of oyster stew (basically warm milk with oysters in it along with a pat of butter) for Christmas Eve dinner. It’s almost impossible to ruin Christmas for a young boy, but the annual dread of Christmas Eve dinner was hard to bear.

I have never been able to enjoy eating oysters. I have tried many times. Chewing them is gross to me. I’d end up swallowing raw ones whole. I don’t hate them but there are so many thing I’d rather have. I’ll eat the hell out of clams.

Goddamn, I love oysters. In the before times (i.e. pre-Covid), wine events here in Napa often had an oyster bar. I would park myself in front of it because one of the greatest pleasures in life is the combination of fresh oysters and good white wine. Think my record for one sitting is between two and three dozen.

My parents fixed this also, but I could say no without fear.

ETA: it was not Christmas dinner but was something they liked.

I have sat down in oyster bars from coast to coast with friends who loved eating raw oysters. I’ve tried to develop a taste for them. There is other seafood I don’t care for either, like squid, octopus, or scallops. I’ll try anything, and if I see friends enjoying something, I’ll try it again. But these are things I would never order on my own.

Raw oysters are not meant to be “chewed”. Down the gullet they go.

Honestly, the only relatively common food I prefer not to eat is octopus. I went to a Korean sushi joint in LA a dozen years ago, and had drunk enough beer to try the still-moving octopus sushi. The next day that’s what I could remember. I haven’t had octopus since.

Yeah, I prefer mine stationary.

That happened to me in Yokohama. Fortunately, my host sent it back for cooking. I did once try “dancing shrimp” on the boat. You head, peel, and very quickly eat the live shrimp. Only once.
