What are you eating?

Yes. Vastly superior to Cane’s imo. Same menu but with flavor.

Very good to know

There was one near our old house.

The first time I ate there it was really, really good. Hint of mustard, crispy breading.

The second time was not nearly as good.

The third time was worse than the second.

Those visits were several months apart. I’m guessing the variance was the result of whoever was running the fryer. The first visit may well have been the best chicken tenders I’ve ever had so worth checking out.

(Apparently it’s a College Station staple. Aggie was super excited when they came to our area.)

Finally tried Layne’s, both the regular and spicy. Both were very good, their house sauce was ok to me, their gravy was surprisingly good for fast-food gravy (I did add more pepper to it when I got home). Only complaint was that I thought the spicy ones were pretty damn salty, but I’m pretty sure that had to do with me eating their salty-as-hell fries at the same time. When I heated a couple of the leftovers up in the air fryer the next day they were just fine.

Not sure I’ll go out of my way again (they’re all the way on the other side of town, maybe 3 miles away), but Spec’s and Lowe’s are up that way…so I’m sure I’ll be eating there again. May ask for no salt on my fries next time.

I did a one day fast yesterday where I only drank liquids. My “lunch“ was hot water with a spicy kimchi Ramen flavoring packet. It was absolutely delicious.

That on an empty stomach and empty pipes throughout the system has been quite the adventure today. En fuego.

Not sure it would work for a fast, but it’s great for cold-weather hot-beverage-replacement.

I just had an Okie-style fried onion burger. Sure was good.

My wife worked in okc for a bit while we were dating and one of the pleasant suprises was the onion burger. Can’t say i crave them, but i sure ate a few when i visited.

I’ll be spending a fair amount of time in OKC over the next couple of years, so any restaurant recommendations would be most welcome. I’ll be based in the downtown area.

Frida for a nice dinner. I recommend the book, Boom Town by Sam Anderson as an excellent primer for Oklahoma City.

Got a container of gumbo out of the freezer yesterday and stuck it in the fridge. I’ve been thinking about gumbo for over 24 hours. Have extra shrimp, okra, if needed. Cornbread mix, saltine crackers, white rice, green onion. I’m ready.

I dump the container out into a pot, and it’s obviously not gumbo, it’s chicken tortilla soup. Which is of course delicious, but I feel robbed of gumbo.

My future project: pot of gumbo

Been busy. Checked online and the scene is a bit different since we were there (2020) but here’s what’s around:

Kitchen 324–went there a lot. Food and service always excellent. Ate most of the menu. They are part of good egg dining group–and we frequented many of their concepts. I would happily go to any restaurant they open. The only time I went to one of their restaurants and wasn’t impressed was “The Drake”…which seems to have closed. It was a seafood restaurant, and confirms my bias against midwest seafood restaurants. My family is from Nebraska, seafood is just one of the many cuisines that should be avoided when in the center of the country. I call Kitchen 324 “a must,” since you are living downtown. My wife ate there recently on a trip, they haven’t lost a step.

There are lots of great coffee shops downtown. Quality coffee is abudantant. I encourage you to explore. I drank lots of amazing coffee in OKC.

Other Good Egg Dining groups i’ve tried:
Cheever’s–brunch
Iron Star–bbq (good for OKC, but its methadone for Texans, sorry).
Rebublic Grill–pub food and watch a game.
Barrios–mexican, upscale and well done.
tucker’s–onion burgers (i recall there was one in the airport).

went to all of them multiple times and they are solid.
I have not gone to:
Red primesteak
Mexican Radio
Would happily go to either–Next time i’m in OKC Mexican Radio is near the top of the list. I am a bad guide to steak houses, I’d rather grill the cow myself.

Jones Assembly–great space and food. Sometimes they have shows. nice bar too.

Hatch is good for basic brekkie fare–but kitchen 324 was where I would go far more often. For a diner experience I prefer the chain, “Jimmy’s egg.” The boys loved it and we always go when traveling in Oklahoma.
Flint is reliable (go before a game).

I just looked at “Eaters” okc guide and I have only been to one of the restaurants: Empire Slice House (good pizza, i’m easy to please). I recognize Nonesuch and Gray Sweater–both are high-end upscale places I didn’t try. I recall Nonesuch winning a national award when it opened (best new restaurant)? Both have survived through covid, which says a lot. I’d probably try any of the eater recommendations (except if they are bbq or seafood forward).

Also, I loved just walking around OKC and using the public transporation. The art museums (even the collection in a downtown art hotel) are solid. The cowboy museum, the zoo, Mixtape (second cousin to Meow Wolf that gets stuff from the Flaming Lips now and then). the parks. the downtown library (and the family puerto rican cafe in the library if it survived). Also liked catching AAA baseball games in bricktown (a horrible tourist trap otherwise by my lights).

Spent my childhood driving through OKC on my way to or from middle of nowhere nebraska. was so pleasantly suprised by all the city has to offer. The people are friendly and welcoming, even to UT Austin alums.

Also, the memorial to the victims of the bombing is worth a few visits. this tragedy has left a deep and smoldering wound in the soul the people and the city. The response to it is admirable and beautiful.

Wing Stop did the job this morning.

I don’t eat wings for the same reason I don’t eat crawfish…too much work per bite. But you get style points for eating wings for breakfast.
