What are you drinking, 2023…and 2024…and 2025...or pretty much ever?

Hotel Paisano is an interesting restored/preserved property in Marfa that served as headquarters for Hollywood types during the filming of Giant. Rooms and bathrooms are little (if at all) upgraded from the 1930s.

That’s where we stayed. The hotel is a shrine to the movie. The rooms are indeed old, but nice. They also now have a brand new elevator, which was out of order. But it’s a really cool old hotel. We like staying in those older, quirky hotels when we can.

I’ve heard good things about the Hotel Saint George. Last time I was in Marga was forty some odd years ago. Fairly certain it doesn’t resemble anything like today.

It’s changed, but probably not as much as you think. Though artsy, it’s still a very, very small town. My wife asked “why is this town here? I mean, I get that it’s now some bohemian arts community where Hollywood types come to stay in a trailer, but why is there even a town here? I get that Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean stayed at the Paisano, but why was the Paisano even built in the first place?” Because it’s Texas, baby.

Trains needed a place to stop for water.

I explained the water station stops when we were in Valentine. Unfortunately, the bar in Valentine, which famously advertises “Hours: When we’re here, we’re open. When we’re not here, we’re closed” was closed.

There was also a big ol’ US Army Air Corps facility there in the 30s-40s, then some artist started buying property there and inviting his artist friends around sometime in the 70’s
