My dad’s new years resolution this year was to drink more cocktails. He and my mom recently returned from Venice with a requisite appreciation for negronis. I introduced him to the boulevardier over the weekend, which was very well received.
You’re a good man doing the Lord’s work. I love gin, but give me a Boulevardier over a Negroni seven days a week and twice on Sundays.
Thought this was interesting…would love to hear thoughts from the oenophiles here:
I cannot imagine referring to my father by any of the listed nicknames for Marines. MAYBE a Leatherneck. He always called himself a Marine. He was in the Pacific Theater in WW2 and was discharged with a broken face and terrible hearing after a bad plane crash, and I figured he had a right to refer to himself however he saw fit.
I’m married to a Navy man. He usually refers to himself as “s sailor” if he doesn’t use “in the Navy” or “Navy man.”
My older boy is in the Army. He was a redleg as an enlisted. He’s now a Mustang and is the leader of a platoon of Beasts.
(Feel free to tell me if I didn’t do any of that correctly.)
Back on topic, tonight’s beverage will consist of me walking to my list of gin cocktails and choosing the first one I see on the list for which I have all of the ingredients.
One of my daughters was an enlisted Sailor for 4 years and then pivoted to Annapolis as a Mustang. It was funny to see the other Plebes and upperclassmen watch her stroll in on day 1 with a chest full of “salad” on her midshipman uniform.
My dad went to West Point. He was Airborne in his first tour in Viet Nam, a Ranger in his second tour and Cavalry in Desert Storm. I only ever heard people call him Ranger.
Several of the guys I played rugby with were former Rangers. Even after they left the regiment, that’s how they referred to themselves and each other.
I made some Royal Hawaiians this week. Effing delicious (and dangerous).
My dad was 101st Airborne and said if he wasn’t called simply by his last name or rank it was “paratrooper”. of course this was 60+ years ago
Tonight, it’s Negronis. Or is it Negronies? Or Negronii? Anyway, get well soon Astros.
They’re Italian, right? I negroni. Singular would be il negrono.
I just bottled my first ever batch of homemade limoncello. It’s pretty good. I may make me a spritz here in a few.
I threatened to do this a bit ago, thanks for reminding me. Let us know how it turns out.
It’s pretty good. Having a limoncello spritz now. I think it’ll be better when it sits a bit longer.
Any particular recipe?
More or less used this one, adapted for 750 ml of Everclear
Limoncello is really easy, just takes time. And it’s important to use unwaxed, organic lemons.
Limoncello played a role in one of my worst nights ever. Combined with Chianti and no food, bad times are lurking.
“no food” is where you all went wrong
That’s always been my problem before
Ooh, you beat me to it. I keep saying I’m gonna make limoncello. Now you’ve forced my hand.
60th bday party at an Italian restaurant. I was working the crowd and forgot to sit down and eat.
I’m pretty sure if it was your 60th birthday party, it was a Roman restaurant, not Italian.
