The sci-fi TV thread

I read that Diego Luna wasn’t interested or at least didn’t want to make that many seasons of Andor. So, the pivot to making a more direct through line to Rogue One in the second season of Andor.

My wife was an actor when she was younger and has a bunch of friends in the business. She says that it’s remarkable how many of them resist type casting early in their careers when they have some success and come to regret that decision as their careers wind down.

Sooo…the beginning of that first Daredevil episode was a kick in the gut. Was not expecting that at all.

Severance S2 E8: ok, that one felt like a filler episode. It did end with a kick-ass song though.

Every Disney reboot has to start with our hero all the way in the shitter. It’s getting a little tired.

Big Spoiler

Fridging Foggy and shipping Karen off to San Francisco is bullshit. Pissed me off it did.

I don’t know, episode 2 was pretty good.

Haven’t watched that yet. I did enjoy the balance of Ep 1.

Spoiler

When Disney first announced the Daredevil reboot, it was going to be a whole new thing without any of the original Netflix cast. Fans went nuts, so they agreed to bring back Cox and D’Onofrio in the lead roles.

Fans then wanted to know about Foggy and Karen, so they said they’d be back too…“for 15 minutes” they didn’t add.

Not sure I’d consider an episode where we find out all of Cobel’s backstory filler, but it was short and we didn’t get any scenes with the other folks. And yes, the closing song kicked ass.

Well, a cryptic bit of backstory for Colvig (thank you, Ricken), but then Severance never really gives you anything straight. It was also, for the most part, beautifully shot. I believe I have seen that town featured in a documentary about dead towns and, IIRC, it’s in Newfoundland. Also, watching that era VW Golf zipping through the landscape seemed somewhat iconic.

But the episode did feel like a pause. The deep breath before the plunge, maybe? Still, I’m not going to be overly worked up about it; 17 episodes in and this is the only one where I have had even a glimmer of a gripe.

Correct, Bonavista and Trinity Bay North Newfoundland.

Ok, Daredevil Reboot Again E2 kicks a lot of bottom.

Much to Matt Murdock’s chagrin, the ending is exactly who we want to see.

Severance is back to its regularly scheduled mind-fuckery.

Paging Limey eta Paging Waldo

I bought the BluRay TNG set on corporate boycott day from a local place (so as to facilitate ditching Paramount subscription) and the quality is strangely poor. Blurry. Proper blurry. With random occasional color strobes.

The set was brand new, unopened. Is it my player? Or is this just the state of the industry?

You probably need Waldo on this one. BluRays can’t be blurry - they’re either clear or they’re pixellated if a bad disk. I think, given the era (effects aside) TNG would’ve been shot on film, so it should look amazing if correctly ported over to BluRay.

In a similar vein, I recently ordered Daredevil Seasons 1-3 from eBay. If you need an example of why you should own such things on physical media, it is that the show has been yoinked from Netflix over to Disney+, where (I presume) they’ve abruptly cut in a bunch of commercial breaks.

I ordered it about a week ago and was surprised to see that it’s shipping from China. It just reached its port of embarkation after circumnavigating the country, it seems. The race is on to see if it arrives before Season 4 ends.

While there is a conspicuous lack of punching people until they develop a speech impediment, Daredevil continues to be excellent. And this week, there is a strong foreshadowing of punching to come.

Spoiler

The scene with Frank Castle was intense and heartbreaking. Cox and Blumenthal were both turned up to 11 in their own ways: the Punisher with everything happening on the outside and Daredevil desperate to keep control and barely able to do so.

…and @HudsonHawk was calling me a nerd for knowing what “afterburners” are

Severance finale. How can you take one of the creepiest, disturbing and most fucked up situations ever imagined, and then turn it up to 11?
