The sci-fi TV thread

I’ve watched the first nine episodes of season of Silo and am hooked enough by the premise to keep watching, but holy shit is the acting and directing horrendous. This would be much better suited as a 30 minute show just to get through it.

Severance is next.

The story is fascinating but every episode has at least 10 minutes of dragging on shit.

Silo is well made but Rebecca Ferguson is really the only part of it that’s any good. She is doing some heavy lifting carrying the whole show. Tim Robbins’ evil overlord schtick is ham-fisted, clichéd and tiresome.

Severance is much more of an ensemble and simply better all round, IMHO.

A ton of credit to Steve Zahn too in season 2. I never in a million years would’ve believed that goof-ass comedy actor Steve Zahn was going to have a run of great characters on good shows in 2024.

They spent ten episodes on the first 40% of the first book, nine episodes on the next 35%, and one episode on the remaining 25%. All of the filler is my biggest complaint about the series so far.

A lot of the performances are forgettable, but I quite like Tim Robbins as Bernard. Maybe that is only because I read Wool.

I was feeling pretty bored and frustrated with the episode, and then I very much wasn’t.

They have to get you comfortable before they yeet the rug. Going to watch it again tonight.

Ray, I disagree somewhat with your theory.

Summary

Irv is right: Helly R never came back - she’s been the outie ever since returning to the severed floor. She’s never seemed quite right since her return, and she’s been a little too understanding toward helping Mark. She hasn’t had Helly’s absolute rage at being an innie.

Good point. I missed that qualifier by Irv and hadn’t thought of that.

After watching I found this and… yeah, it all adds up.

So now I’m going to have to re-watch the entire season so far. Not the worst thing in the world.

Yes, I will be rewatching Severance S1 before I dive into S2

There was an episode of Black Mirror about exactly this. It didn’t end well.

Junk food psychology.

“Approximately 60% of current jobs may disappear”. President Musk just splooged in his pants.

This is already a thing. People are actively conversing with digital twins of people like Albert Einstein:

An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.

Spoilers for Severance S2E6:

Summary

Fields makes a specific point of noting that Burt and Irving may have had unprotected sex - in the same episode where Helly finally gets her first time with Mark S.

To use Fields’ own phrase, I think there’s much more than a non-zero chance that Helena and Helly are pregnant.

Or Burt has HIV.

Also, Fields’ “mistake” about Burt being severed for 20 years when it only began 12 years ago may not be a mistake.

I suspect Burt has a more important role in Lumon’s history than being simply a severed worker.
