The sci-fi TV thread

I like that idea a lot.

No way Disney lets it happen, but you’d at least have a chance to see some real development on shows that deserve a second chance/life.

That’s interesting. My comments about the show above represent my opinions about the show (and acting) but I think most of the issues were fixable. Especially since they already killed off like 70% of the cast. I’m surprised they did not approve one more season to close the thing out and use that closeout season to shock and awe. Try some new and risky storytelling and character development vectors and see if they can spawn another “Andor”-like storyline.

Lord almighty, it reportedly cost them $180 million to make the first season. No wonder they pulled the plug.

Tend to agree. They will need to resurrect (see what I did there?) that storyline at some other point. It’s too much canon to ignore.

There is also a missed opportunity with Qimir. He was the one compelling and reasonably well acted character in Acolyte. And, did a good job of normalizing the rational behind choosing the dark side. Develop that character a bit more and you create a whole second market of SW fandom. It’s no longer a simple fight between good and evil, it’s a fundamental disagreement between world (universe) views, which is rich storytelling fodder. And, he fits the title perfectly. The whole SW fan base would be like, "ohhhhhh, the acolyte is Qimir, not Osha / Mae.

Yeah, that small upstart Disney company definitely can’t handle a big budget.

That was for 8 episodes of 30 - 60 mins each; say 4 hours of programming. For comparison purposes, the Rise of Skywalker cost $400 million - so nearly the same cost per minute as a TV show.

WTF are they doing that their TV shows cost so much?

The Acolyte didn’t land a big audience or do well critically. Andor was a similarly ambitious production and didn’t draw a huge audience either, but it was actually good, so they gave it a second season.

They should try making good shows more often.

I’m not arguing your point.

I’m just saying Disney can afford to spend a little money even if a show doesn’t do well it’s first season. Especially if part of your continued story is some of the most interesting mostly-untold lore in Star Wars.

I hear you. My hope is that they continue to throw mountains of cash at original stories one way or the other. If scrapping the bad ones makes room for new ones, I’m good with it.

Didn’t you know it’s not the sort of story a Jedi would tell?

I started watching Agatha Everywhere All at Once (or something like that) on Disney - the WandaVision spin off. I turned it off after about 15 mins because it was just some awful, cliché detective yarn and Katherine Hahn was hamming it up to 11 as the unconventional, quirky detective.

But I kept seeing all this praise for the show. So I gave it another chance and, as it turned out, I had quit on the show right before the script was flipped and things truly kicked off. Katherine Hahn is delightfully devious and the show (2 episodes in) looks like it will be tons of fun.

Spoiler for Ep 1

At the beginning, Agatha (Hahn reprising her role as the witch from WandaVision) is trapped in an awful, cliché detective yarn courtesy of a legacy spell cast by Wanda herself. This is why Hahn was hamming it up, because she was essentially living in the “Sabotage” video until she was able to break free.

I struggled with the first 15 minutes or so as well, but I stuck it out. The rest of the 1st and all of the 2nd episode are pretty entertaining.

Definitely going to have to re-watch at least the finale from last season before starting the new one.

Rebecca Ferguson wanders out of the Silo into the severe landscape of some game you have been playing.

Ep 1 sets up a very intriguing premise.

Why am I posting this in the Sc-Fi TV thread?

If you know, you know.

Lower Decks season 5 is well under way.

The only thing I don’t like about it is that this is the final season.
