Smart home getting dumber

I like TV as much as the next guy, but that’s a bit extreme.

Is Hitachi still in the TV market?

Doesn’t look like it.

It’s just being coy. It’s nothing it’s not seen before.

Ignoring the double entendre for a legit question…why would you have to mount the TV to use a soundbar?

The TV is on a stand, but the TV’s feet make it impossible to put a soundbar underneath it.

So another potentially dumb questions…why does the soundbar have to be underneath the TV? Could you not simply mount the soundbar either above or below the TV? I mean, I get that in its current setup the soundbar doesn’t fit on the table or cabinet on which the TV sits, but the soundbar doesn’t have to be underneath the TV to get the desired effect, does it?

Because the TV is on a stand, the screen sits a reasonable amount away from the wall. If I put a soundbar on the wall above the TV it would look weird and, being in a townhome, I am reluctant to put speakers on the wall as they’ll resonate into the neighbors home.

Can’t put it underneath because of the type of TV cabinet it’s on (which works so well with the TV that I don’t want to change it).

Big fan of my setup with a modestly priced receiver and a couple of decent bookshelf speakers. I’m sure there are more cost-effective solutions but the classics are the classics for a reason. Soundbar wasn’t a good aesthetic fit for the way my TV is mounted.

+1. Mine is simply two Polk Audio Reference 15’s, a MartinLogan Grotto subwoofer and an old Yamaha receiver/amp I had laying around connected to the TV with a digital optical cable. It will crumble the house down if I ask it to.

I used my dad’s busted old Yamaha for a long time but recently got a newish Denon with some HDMI ports. Between my various devices and the Yamaha’s lack of inputs I had some real frankenstein rigging with a bunch of cables and adapters running through my wall, and I wasn’t able to consolidate on a single remote very well. The new receiver fixed all that for me, but I miss the charm of the old Yamaha.

For the speakers I picked up a set of the Emotiva B1+ on sale. I’ve been very happy with them. No sub at the moment but I’ve been keeping an eye on eBay to find a used option I like.

I was thinking more something like this:

Didn’t know there was such a thing. Something to look into.

I have an even better value proposition for you… a single HomePod Mini. I actually haven’t taken the plunge on the stereo pair in our bedroom because I’ve been satisfied enough with just the one. It gets loud enough for us and speech intelligibility on TV shows is great (I haven’t tried any movies yet). I would prefer some more EQ options since the speaker is a little boomy and I can’t dial in the brighter sound I prefer, but I can live with it.

I already have one in the bedroom, but I haven’t set it up to be the TV speaker. I’ll try that.

One the Mini’s settings, there is an option to reduce bass sounds. Have you tried that? It might allow the mid & upper ranges to be a little more prominent. But, agreed, the dearth of EQ controls is frustrating.

Do none of you guys have a regular old 2-channel stereo setup anymore? I run my TV through that and it works fine. I think. Maybe I’m missing out.

Haven’t had that in a decade. Not knocking it. If it’s what you have and you’re happy, it’s fine.

These days, though, wireless speakers offer immense flexibility for deploying surround sound, while HomePods and the like perform multiple functions in addition to being speakers (e.g. smart home hub/router, voice assistant, alarm clock, intercom…).

And you’re happy with the sound quality? Do you use them for music, or is that just not something these days? I’m not knocking either, just wondering if people are replacing something that does one thing really well and another so-so for something that does one thing so-so and the other really well. Or are you adding stuff? Sounds like you’ve replaced the old with the new based on priority, not adding more stuff. Just getting a feel for where people are.
