You tore the tag off and can’t tell me the name, right? The feds will be there any minute.

I don’t know how fancy I am, but my wife and I slept on one of those beds in a hotel and she fell in love with it. She joked at the hotel “can I buy a mattress from you”, and they said “as a matter of fact, yes you can”. So we did. And I’m not one of those who throws his mattress out every 8 years, so I’m with you on the longevity thing. It hopefully won’t be my last mattress, but I wouldn’t mind another.

That’s amazing. Ours is only a few years old and still going strong, but next time I’m in the market I’m checking out the Marriott option.

I just checked, and they are actually on sale at the moment. So you can get the same one I got in 2013 for less than what I paid then. They are not cheap, but it’s been just excellent quality.

My dad started saying “this is the last xx I’ll ever buy” around 20 years ago. It sounded funny to me then but I understood what and why he was saying it. It’s shocking how quickly I have come to the same place/understanding about myself whenever I buy something that has any minimal longevity to it these days.

I do the mattress swap between our bed and the one in the guest bedroom that gets minimal use, so between a new one and the one in there I’ve got 30 years or so to go, god willing

On old boss of mine was an ass, but one thing he said made me laugh. His third wife had wanted to live in Tanglewood, so he built a house in Tanglewood (he was loaded - having stolen the labor of countless employees over decades). Within months of moving in, she wanted to move because she didn’t;t like the through traffic. So he built a house, on Buffalo Bayou, at the east end of the park.

“I told her,” he said, “this is the house you’re going to die in.”

“One way or another, this is the house you’re going to die in.”

Did she die in a flood?

I saw only 1 dead body in that stretch of bayou, back in the day when we’d paddle around it.

I remember having several great meals at the Rainbow Lodge. Excellent back yard area for cocktails and cigars.

…now I will cease reminiscing

Being ahead of the game in creating his own mini-apocalypse bunker (this was early 2000s), he bragged about spending $250,000 on foundations that would leave the house standing even if the entire park washed away in a biblical flood.

Looking at amazon…does 150-200 bucks sound about right?

I may want one of those for the old mattress

Also…I need a new thermostat. Any good recs? I’ve looked online but was curious what you people have to say.

I don’t need it to talk to my doorbell and refrigerator, sorry @Limey

Rainbow Lodge was awesome. It was there that I saw a waiter use a table crumber for the first time. I was mighty impressed. As was my date.

I have a smart thermostat that came with my new A/C system. It’s made by Trane specifically for their stuff. I once had a Nest, and it was pretty sleek and intuitive. I don’t need it to talk to the refrigerator, but it’s nice to be able to adjust through the app.

I have an Ecobee thermostat that was installed when my 27 yr old AC unit was replaced last year (how it lasted 27 yrs in Austin summers is beyond amazing).
I like the thermostat- it’s user friendly, you can program temps remotely via their app and overall, I’m pleased, fwiw.

Mine was Perry’s. I remember it like it was yesterday.

We like our ecobees too.

I’ve never tried the learning feature of any thermostat. I just like the convenience of setting it remotely and programming it myself.

First time/place I ever ate emu

I have a Nest and it’s damn convenient when lying in bed and wanting to adjust the AC. It has other features like an eco mode that I sometimes take advantage of. Super easy to install and set up.
