Once again England and Panama are in the same group. Oh joy. Also Croatia. Maybe they’ll stick the Oceania runner up in there just to be nice so we’re not the worst team in the tournament again.
Anyway, I look forward to Limey complaining about how rough our guys play again when he returns from his sabbatical. Or his van adventure or whatever he’s up to.
“Worst” as in every team sucks donkey or “worst” as in they’ll have the hardest time? I don’t really follow futbol, other than rooting for Palace and Panama vicariously. And against France, on general principle.
This is certainly true. A few writers are trying to make Group I (France, Senegal, Norway, TBD) the GOD, and the basis is that both Mbappe and Haaland are in it. Looks to me that the group led by Panama is the most tightly competitive, but I can’t imagine anyone really expects that England and Croatia won’t advance in some order.
If Panama is competitive in any way I will be most pleased. If they somehow come away with a point by tying Ghana or by some miracle three by beating them I will be elated. But England and Croatia are going to have a field day against Panama, lamentablemente.
At least they aren’t playing in the same group as a Latin American powerhouse with one or more players the guys grew up idolizing. When that happens, like when they play Argentina and Messi plays, the Panama guys more or less quit playing and spend more time watching Messi play than anything. Maybe that fellow Bellingham will fill the role since he plays in Spain and I’m sure our guys are familiar with him. Or maybe the coach will be able to snap them out of that mindset. I don’t really need to see another Harry Kane hat trick.
