Music 2026

Also, there’s no end of punk, new wave, Americana and who knows what else that came along after 1980 or so that these people seem totally unaware of.

What I like about Texas - Gary P. Nunn

“these people”?

The dumbass boomers who made this fucked up list.

Now that you have me annoyed I’ll mention that I fucking hate Me and Bobby McGee, and I don’t like Janis Joplin at all. But I particularly hate that song. It’s right in the same area as Hey Jude, but nowhere near Hotel California or anything by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

For some reason, that reminded me of that song by Stump, Charlton Heston - “Charlton Heston put his vest on…”

You’re free to like and dislike what you want. After all, freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose. Just take a sad song and make it better.

Janis’ Me and Bobby McGee is a cover. Roger Miller released it first. Kris Kristofferson wrote it.

Just in case you haven’t seen it yet, here’s Angine de Poitrine.

It went on for 22 more minutes after I bailed. I bet that guitar rig is heavy. Are you sure that’s not Jack White and his ex-wife reprising as the White Dots?

I’ve never seen a band go viral as quickly and bigly as these wacky French Canadians. Who knew experimental, microtonal math-rock would have such broad appeal?

It’s crazy. I know it’s not for everyone but I dig it.

Shifting gears, got to see one of my favorite listens lately at Royal Albert Hall when I was in London last week. Totally by chance as I thought, “hmmmm, I’m here, I wonder if they are”. Wolf Alice. Excellent show. Excellent North London band. If new to you, start from their first album and revel in the progression over the last 9 years or so.

I’m glad you reminded me of these kooks. I hear them on the radio sometimes and I always think Man these people are good, I should look into them and then I never do. Well, now I am. Bandcamp FTW.

Anyway, does anyone know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall?

Ellie’s range is pretty amazing. The ear naturally wants to follow as she goes high but it’s an absolute treat to follow her low instead, which she often does at the same time in their recorded music. Their latest album is a departure from their alt rock roots and took me a couple of listens to get into since it is so different. I’d swear they spent a year listening to the various members of the Traveling Wilburys for influence. Not the Traveling Wilburys, the band, but the various members throughout their careers. If you start with their latest album, like a lot of people do, you’ll be surprised by their catalog of earlier stuff. And, vice versa.

Their first records remind me of a band from Baltimore called Wye Oak. I especially like their record Civilian. Give it a listen the next time you have a 500 mile drive and let me know what you think.

Civilian is great. Highly recommend anyone who hasn’t already giving it a listen.

White Horses is in heavy AAA rotation…it’s pretty much a krautrock groove.

It’s the song on the new album that most resembles their previous stuff.
