It’s Capone’s now right? I’m drawing a complete bank on the name of the predecessor. I think it was something vaguely New Orleans related.

I’m thinking velvet Melvin or something like that.

There was a Velvet Elvis that I think morphed into Velvet Melvin further down Richmond. I did some legwork and I think the place in question was called Mugsy’s. It’s now named Dino’s Den which seems a shame since Dino could easily have called the place Dino’s Bar 'n Grill.

Ah, Mugsy’s that was it. I liked that place. I remember spending a long afternoon for Limey’s birthday there on the patio once. At least, I remember arriving.

Mugsy’s is the correct answer.

As for Capone’s, immediately prior to being Capone’s it was a shifty nightclub notable only for the sheer volume of negative Yelp reviews about its racist bouncers, and it was a South American restaurant before that.

The Velvet Elvis was sued by Elvis’ estate, and lost, hence the name change. They’d spent so much money on lawyers, though, that they went out of business shortly afterwards.

Drink will flow and blood will spill. That’s definitely a draw.

I had a Colombian friend turn me on to Nathy Peluso a few months back and have been listening to her almost non-stop ever since. A fair amount of her music is hip hop which might limit the appeal for many here. Most of her lyrics are in Spanish which may turn off even more. But actually there’s all sorts of stylings and influences in her music including salsa, reggaeton and flamenco (also tango which is appropriate I guess given that she was born in BA before later moving to Madrid with her family). It’s all that mix that appeals to my eclectic side and why I like her so much. That and the fact she’s got a great voice.

I’ve listened to 30+ of her songs and have yet to hear one I didn’t really like (although one of the songs she’s most known for, “Buenos Aires”, is one of my least favorite). If you decide to check her out, start with “Business Woman”, “Delito”, “Sana Sana”, “Sugga”, “Puro Veneno”, “La Sandunguera” and “Mafiosa”.

Among other things this year she performed for SXSW back in March.

An if we wanna fight they bettuh lettuce

A few minutes ago I approached my Colombian wife to see if she knew this artist and if so what did she think. She was sitting on the couch in front of her laptop and had headphones on. As I stood there preparing my question I was curtly informed that she was ‘busy.’ I leaned over to see what she was doing and I saw a video of a guy in a cassock. So she was either watching a particularly gripping episode of Father Brown or is secretly planning some sort of religious conversion. I will provide updates as the situation warrants.

I think she needs to hang out with batgirl and i.

All this time I’ve misheard Geno’s for Dino’s.

Did she tell you to “feck off!”?

Before Dexy’s spammed the music world with “Eileen”:

At least she wasn’t watching a murder show. Taking notes. I have to keep my eye open.

It’s recording day on the left coast and I had such good results with my last pair of Blue Note’s “Tone Poet” series of reissues I decided to give it another go.

Today’s selections are:
Stanley Turrentine’s Hustlin’ with an amazing lineup. The incomparable Shirley Scott on organ, Kenny Burrell on guitar, the great Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Otis Finch on drums.

Lee Morgan’s The Cooker with an all-star lineup including Bobby Timmons, one of the most tasteful pianists of all time, the immortal Paul Chambers on bass, the grossly underrated Pepper Adams on the grossly underrated baritone saxophone, and the masterful “Philly” Joe Jones on drums.

As always, the equipment is a VPI Scout II turntable, a Dynavector DV-20X2 cartridge, a Jolinda JD9-II phono stage with Tung Sol 12AX7 tubes, and a Nakamichi Dragon cassette deck. Tape is Type II and I’ll probably use Dolby C noise reduction because the vinyl will be very quiet.

It’s all very analogical.

I’m going to posit that it’s slightly more anal than logical.

SFN, whatever it’s good for.

So in case you were wondering, I got that TEAC 4010 working. It’s actually running and sounding pretty damn good. It stopped recording, however. It did for a bit, then one channel dropped out and now will not go into record mode on either. Plays back awesome, just no record. Not sure what they issue is, but one more thing.

In other open reel news…saw a guy locally with a Pioneer RT-707 for sale. He says it’s in excellent condition, will throw in the original aluminum take up reel and five 7-inch Maxell tapes, all for $300. Sounds like a pretty good deal, as just the accessories are a couple hundred bucks. Just don’t know if I need another taking up space. Hifi gear is like crack.

This is kind of an odd post, but I’m a sucker for Christmas music, and during the Christmas season I listen to a lot of it. This year reminded me that last year I downloaded an album of Christmas music by a Louisiana contemporary Christian singer named Lauren Daigle. That’s not my normal bailiwick, so I suppose I saw it reviewed in The NY Times: but here are the three things you need to know about it. 1) it must be recorded in New Orleans, the arrangements have an extraordinary jazzy feel; 2) Daigle has spotless behind-the-beat phrasing; and (3) and this is the important one, Daigle has the sexiest voice since Billie Holiday. It’s stunning.
