General Movie Thread

Oh, you’re not blocked from those, just that on the $9 plan you would get the same ad-interference that you would get if you weren’t subscribed.

Basically, they now have three tiers:

  • Free: ads everywhere, all at once
  • $9 tier: ads only on music vids and shorts
  • $19 tier: no ads

YT has a shit ton of movies, a shit-ton TV shows and a shit-ton of long-form content, all of which would be ad-free on the $9 tier

I actually watched Sneakers on Youtube the other day with ads, and it wasn’t an awful experience.

When I watch music videos or movie trailers on regular YT, which is 81.4% of what I do, I get one initial ad that runs for 5 seconds before it gives me the option to skip the rest.

I’ve become more accustomed to ads now that via my cable provider I get Disney+, HBO+, AMC+, Paramount+, Peacock+ with about 3 minutes (maybe 6, who cares) of ads for every hour of show. It’s a great time to go take a piss or check your phone.

I’ll take that bargain. It’s Spectrum, btw. Unfortunately they do not offer a “watch live sports in the future” package. I asked.

I downloaded the Brave browser and now I never get ads on YouTube.

I watch movies on Tubi, and the ads don’t bother me there. What did bother me on YT - before paying up for the ad-free version - is the frequency of ad breaks on content of shorter length (say <10 mins) and, when it comes to Shorts, having to watch an ad that may be longer than the clip itself.

In paying full freight currently and I never watch shorts or music videos, so that sounds perfect for me.

What do you do when a random song pops into your head? Go look through the bookcase of albums?

If I know the song, I usually listen to it on Apple Music. If I don’t know the song, I let it torture me for years until I hear it again or remember what it is.

ETA: ah, there’s the catch—it doesn’t come with background play. Nonstarter for me.

Had an urgent urge to take a piss on road this morning. Finally got to a spot where I could get a cattle trailer in/out. The minute I start pulling in, “Snake Farm” by Ray Wylie Hubbard starts playing on the radio. It played over and over in my head the 2 minutes I was inside.

That’s one hell of a euphemism.

Who says it was a euphemism?

I’ve discovered a cure for earworms, Baby Love by the Supremes. Every time I hear Baby Love, it makes me happy and then I forget it. So now when I’m stuck repeating an unlikeable song in my head I can sing the first verse of Baby Love, forget all about the other song, and go through the rest of my life ear worm free. Someday this could save your life.

I don’t want to remember my last bad earworm but I can not forget it went on for a few days. I’d get up to pee in the middle of the night and it would still be going. I would listen to something else and as soon as I stopped, back came the earworm.

Don’t worry. It just means you’re a Cylon.
