Rays release Forrest Whitley to pursue an opportunity in Japan.

Probably a good move by Forest. He should get a good chance to pitch if healthy and there’s now a pretty good track record of guys performing well there getting paid by MLB teams to return down the line. Plus…he will feel like Godzilla over there.

Good financial move too. AAA salary is up to a whopping $36K. US pitchers over there tend to start at between $65K and $100K per year.

Over/under 4 teams this year?

I think they make more than that in Japan. My cousin’s son went to Japan after bouncing between AAA and MLB over three years. When he first signed, his contract was announced at 1.3 million with another 300K available in incentives. He just finished his 4th season in Japan (2 with Tigers/2 with Giants). He loves it over there. There is a mutual option for this season.

Plus he gets all the sushi he can eat. I’d do that deal just for the sushi.

I can’t get out of a sushi bar for less than $100, so I’d take that deal

I bet you I’ve never spent more than $50 in a sushi bar in Japan, and I’ve never left anything shy of stuffed.
