Correa Re-Signing: Will He or Won't He?

Correa now represented by Boras.

Bye-bye

I don’t think this changes the (already slim) odds one way or another. Altuve and McCullers are Boras guys and they signed long-term extensions here. Crane isn’t scared of Boras like Drayton was.

At this point I’ve already come to terms that Correa is gone. To change agents this far into free agency clearly shows that he wasn’t getting the huge money/year offers that he was after.

There has been an ongoing lockout for a number of weeks now, so there haven’t been any offers at all. Secondly, Correa’s former agency, William Morris, has undergone some issues of late with their baseball agents. First, they lost their big dog, Billy Eppler, who left to become the GM of the Mets. Secondly, they have been trying to acquire stakes in various minor league operations, which is a violation of the MLBPA agent rules. Their other agents were warned to either leave the agency or risk being decertified as MLBPA agents. This likely has more to do with the turmoil of his previous agency than his lack of offers, though Boras will certainly get him top dollar.

I agree on the second point, but I think it actually brings back the possibility of his return if his market hadn’t developed like he wanted.

Right. Basically my read is that there was zero chance before, so if this changes the situation at all, it can only be for the better.

ETA: Hudson makes great points that probably explain the situation better than anything else.

Yeah, this seems to be the driving force. Correa being a good leader for the MLBPA.

IIRC, Correa got involved with William Morris upon Alex Rodriguez’s advice. WM is, of course, most notable for representing music, film, and television entertainers, and represented ARod in his career as a broadcaster. They wanted to get into sports agency, and hired a few guys from Excel, and the aforementioned Eppler. ARod convinced Correa to join up, but they lost agents, got crossways with the MLBPA and just generally never got a solid footing in that business. I don’t know their current status, but I can see Correa wanting to go with a proven top-money guy like Boras for the biggest decision of his life.

Question:

Can the production of Bregman and Pena 2022

Equal or exceed

Bregman and Correa 2021?

We all know Alex had a very down year but none of the other positions really should decline.

Think the production of Bregman deserves its own question mark.

No, in all likelihood not. Unless Bregman becomes 2019 Bregman and Pena is good which is a long shot since he has never played in the Big Leagues and only played 30 in AAA

Anything you get from Pena is a bonus. Do not plan on getting anything from him

I disagree

While I don’t expect 2019 Alex Bregman I can see him equalling Correa’s production from last year

And

I don’t expect all star hitting numbers from Pena, I could see him hitting .250 with 12-15 hr and 15-20 sb ( if they let him run) that is not nothing.

And what I’m saying is expecting anyone to bat 250 is too much. The league hits about 230 now, so expecting someone to “only” hit 250 is expecting someone to be well above average especially for that player to be a SS.

Not that AVG is an important stat any longer but Fangraphs has 7 different projections listed for him.

4 of the 7 have him at .250 or higher

.241 is the low
.254 is the high.

I defer to their expertise on projections rather than my own.

FTR the 7 average out to a .711 OPS.

Only 12 SS last year exceeded that so they expect him to be at least an average MLB shortstop with the bat in 2023

Far from NOTHING.

Dude, the guy has played 30 games above A ball and hasn’t played more than 6 weeks straight of games since 2019. I don’t give a shit what fangraphs thinks of him. NOBODY knows if he will be great or terrible. That is why I say expect nothing. You asking of him and Bregman can match Correa and Bregman is ludicrous.

Totally

I understand your point and agree that Pena is almost an unknown quantity.

But Bregman had a terrible year

I respectfully disagree that my question is ludicrous

The answer very well might be NO but I disagree that it is not a valid question.

And if he is the starting shortstop then we all hope its a YES but at least should ask the question.

158 runs, 38 homeruns, 147 rbi that’s what Correa and Bregman combined for.

I love that this is the test of anything.
