College football 2024

I have a friend who has a son that runs cross-country for UT’s track team. He gets over $1000.00 a month in NIL money. It is also my understanding that is the base for all of UT’s athletes, in every sport.

Same with every kid in the music department, same with the drama. They are all there to entertain the students, faculty, alumni, and fans.

Was Leland Sharrock the director at Churchill back then? He was at Temple from sometime in the mid-80s through mid-90s and I think I remember him saying he was at Churchill in the 70s.

And learn.

Just more anecdotal grist for the mill…

My nephew plays football at a DII school in Missouri. We talked this past week about the portal and NIL money. The latter doesn’t figure into his world, but the portal is a big part of it. He says routinely half the players in DII go into the portal every year. 90% of them just end up at another DII school, likely within their own league. Teams just end up swapping players. It’s kind of silly. There are a few who go on to DI schools, but they are rare. Most DII players go into the portal thinking they will get offers from DI schools, but they just think they are better than they are. He laughs at all these kids who come in thinking they are big time, but half of them wouldn’t even start at big high school programs in TX.

My nephew is someone who could benefit from the portal. He was young and still growing when he graduated high school, and only got one DI offer, but it wasn’t a full scholarship. He started his first NCAA football game at age 17 when he was 6’ 5" and 270 lbs. He’s now 20 and is 6’ 8" and about 300 lbs. He has a couple of years of eligibility, and he’s been encouraged to enter the portal. He doesn’t know if he wants to, as he likes his school, and has no delusions of greatness. He has a plan for after college. He says he just wants to play football as long as he can and isn’t interested in being a backup at a DI school. He played every offensive snap for his team this season, and he just wants to hit people, in his words. He’s nothing if not self-aware.

Let’s not get crazy. It’s college, after all.

Not silly at all. If a guy thinks he will never play at the school where he is, he should be able to transfer without penalty. Women athletes use it too.

Not the ability to transfer in the portal, the part about how all the guys think they are gonna go star for Notre Dame and be a first round NFL pick, but end up back at Southwest Hill Valley State, the team they beat two weeks ago. The silly part is how many guys lack self-awareness and think they are superstars.

Oh, ok. I misunderstood. I totally agree re unrealistic expectations. That funnel gets damn small at each step up the ladder.

Yes, Leland was assistant at Churchill for a couple of years while I was at Churchill. He is a good friend, and came in for a visit a couple of weeks ago.

Crazy small world. Ha. Good man and a great director. I wasn’t much of a musician but those days were a lot of fun. Looking back, 30 years later, I feel like I learned a lot more about life than music, and I learned a lot about music.

I’ll let him know of your sentiment the next time I see him. I assume your name is as it is on the site? :grinning:
State your name and instrument, sir.
You can do that in PMs if you wish.

With apologies to SEC Shorts, Matt almost always does it better
