I suspect that one of the reasons defensive statistics are so useless is because most MLB players are really pretty close defensively. If you throw out the really bad defensive players, and the really good, most are going to be clustered so tightly in their skills that it’s just not worth thinking about. Correa, Altuve, Gurriel, and Bregman are pretty exceptional. Every other Astro could play his position on any major league team, but would get edged out by somebody exceptional. None of them are inadequate.
This is not a very subtle analysis, and catchers are different.
One does not have to be a professional chef to know when food is burnt or an artist to enjoy beauty.
Never claimed to be a baseball aficionado, just a fan that enjoys the game w/o most of the nuances that many here have developed over the years.
Here’s what I liked about the play: the ball never touched the grass, no one got hurt, and Blummer’s comment about “synchronized outfielders”. Good stuff!
Bullshit snuffy. Tucker saved the play by a dive which should have been unnecessary. Straw’s route took him away from the ball initially, and he would have had to dive and would have been fortunate to catch it. He is better but not there yet.
