Luckily, I’m just following on gamecast while finishing up at work. Are they trying to provide an explanation/excuse for why so many umps seem visually (or neurologically) impaired with this ump cam?

The ump cam is a really bad idea. The cam is on top of his mask, not lined up with his eyes so the camera does not show what the umpire sees.
It’s also a wide angle lens so everything is distorted.
Essentially looks like a first gen gopro.

The other problem is the union. Solid umpires are stuck in AA or AAA, and then phase out when they run out of time and there is no place available in the Bigs. Maybe two of the best umpires work in the MLB, the rest are in Colleges or the Minors.
