That opposite field gap extra base hit may be my favorite thing in baseball, better than a hit and run, better than any squeeze play, MAYBE even better than a 1-0 game.
Take what you can get
Better than a steal of third.
JPâs steal of 3b pays off as an Altuve sac fly makes it 6-2
Astros, in quite the flourish of scoring, have 6 runs through 7 innings. Who knows how high they can flyâŚ.on a get-us-the-fuck out of here, we are 3 hours late, kind of night??
Rooms 2 Go, I very much do not need a sound system built into a sectional sofa.
Not enough for that post.
Put a blue star on that one, Mr. Smith!
Cam Smith is a solid RF.
Abreu with a nice crisp 1-2-3 8th and weâll head to the 9th, 6-2 Astros
EE-SOCK X2!
8-2 Astros, letâs give Hader the night off
Ort allows the first two to reach, getting Hader back up in the pen.
Ponche for out 1
Another ponche for out 2
A weak 6-3 roller, and thatâs your ballgame!
8-2 Astros, goodnight everyone
Heâs gonna win a gold glove out there some day
Iâd love for it to be a Silver Slugger.
I think he may have a shot at that some day too
I am impressed with how Smith just seems to be improving every day. I donât know how it will ultimately manifest in this seasonâs numbers, but heâs just getting better and better.
Coming into the season I basically thought that if he could hit his weight, play a halfway decent RF, and not be overwhelmed and hurt his development, thatâd be a big success. What heâs doing a year out of college is remarkable.
He has exceeded any expectations I would have placed on him. He has the makings of a real hitter.
Iâm most impressed by his defense, the guy is learning the OF at the big league level and is already well above average after 50 games, bording on elite. Baseball savants OAA is my goto defensive metric, they have him 80th percentile overall and 94th percentile in range. His arm is 81st percentile for strength but he still needs to work on his throws from out there, I have no doubt heâll improve greatly on that in the years to come.
The olâ âeyeball testâ doesnât jibe with this (and all caveats about age and MiLB experience are duly noted), but I thought it interesting:
Smith: .245 / .328 / .362 / .690
Dezenzo: .245 / .321 / .367 / .688
Dezenzo has half as many at bats, and theyâve been in specific situations, so itâs not quite a 1:1 comparison. Not that either are having All-Star seasons, but as you say, the eyeball test definitely says Smith is the better prospect. Dezenzo is a roster filler. Smith has potential to be a really good everyday Major League outfielder.
