Good interview with Gavin Dickey on Chandler Rome’s podcast. Unfortunately they don’t have an audio engineer and there’s a high-pitched ringing from Dickey’s mic the whole time, but if you can stand that, he talks about his background, the changes he’s seen the org go through since he was hired (under Ed Wade!), plus notes on Cam Smith, Walker Janek, Chase Jaworsky, Miguel Ullola, Joseph Sullivan…

Director of Pitching Eric Niesen has been hired by his alma mater Wake Forest to be their new pitching coach.
Interesting tidbit demonstrating how the Astros front office coordinates between departments:
According to a team source, Niesen will remain with the Astros through the MLB Draft July 13-14.
Scouting, player dev, coaching staff, it’s all connected.

I wish the medical staff could match the sterling results of our pitching braintrust. Something seems off.
Chandler Rome reports Wake Forest is now courting Astros director of hitting Dan Hennigan. Says the Astros fended off a couple of other MLB teams trying to poach him over the offseason too. Hennigan is the mechanics guy and plays a big role in the majors and minors alike.
Offensive coordinator on a major league team to an assistant coach at a university. That seems to be quite a step down.
The money’s better at a lot of college programs. Just more brain drain from an organization that’s seen far too much of it already.

I’m not so sure that whoever is in charge of the Astros’ hitting is the brainpower of the organization.

Wake hired this guy from the Stros last summer, he’s an alum and familiar with Dan Hennigan. He’ll be the pitching guy and Hennigan will do the same with the offense.
