Astros Front Office Changes

This has been on my mind but I am not sure it happened that way. If the GM hire is close to the finish line, it’s very possible they are already lining up other hires with his input. It sounds like there is a lot happening behind the scenes with some announcements coming shortly.

If there are announcements imminent I’d expect them today or tomorrow. MLB doesn’t like announcements during the World Series.

A friend of mine points out that the announcement on Espada and the coaching staff came the day after the event Crane and Kleine attended together.

If they’re snagging a Brewers guy they’re especially not going to announce it in the middle of their playoff run.

McTaggart mentions another name in the mix: Rays AGM Kevin Ibach. He’s been in that org a long time and worn a lot of hats there. I know the Driveline guy likes him.

Astros hired Clayton Thompson yesterday as the Assistant Director of Player Performance. Another former Driveline employee; also spent the last three years working for the Dodgers as their Coordinator of Integrated Performance.

Looks like the string of two consecutive years of crippling injuries is set to continue. The Dodgers have been as bad as the Astros in that regard.

At least, the Astros will be consistent. High marks.

Chasing the worst part of a juggernaught Dodgers organization.

It’s been a sharp mental pivot for me. For a decade I was in the “trust the braintrust” camp. It’s getting harder and harder.

A new GM and new manager seems like such a great time to do a tough eval, make tough decisions and head in a different direction since the league(s) has caught up. I’ll suspend disbelief for the next 3-5 months but, my untrained eye does not like what it sees so far.

I hear you, and certainly don’t disagree about this being an excellent opportunity to overhaul the front office. But, until a new GM and Manager are hired, I remain somewhat agnostic about the new guys (though, I’ve heard good things about Medick). I want to see what the larger plan/new staff looks like before passing judgement.
