He also can’t mess with the roster much unless he goes nuclear and trades Brown, Peña, etc… People like Alvarez and Hader can’t be moved until they’ve shown they can be productive and healthy for a good part of a season (so next trading deadline at the soonest). And all of the possible trade targets have one thing in common… they’re not part of the problem.
Most everyone else is untradeable due to some combination of age, contract and injury history.
Alvarez is at an under market contract and could be moved for a premium package in a heartbeat.
You don’t trade a talent like Alvarez at this point in his career and contract lifecycle. Ever.
I certainly wouldn’t recommend it. But even if Brown is thinking crazy thoughts, other teams might want to be sure that Yordan’s hand will work for a full season.
Not even worth discussing an Alvarez trade, but I take Spleen’s point. There are only so many ways to shake things up and Espada is more expendable than any of the players of note.
Espada also doesn’t have a clear base of support in the org. He’s a holdover from the Hinch days and while he got promoted under Brown, they weren’t so sold on him that they named him Dusty’s successor immediately—they went through a whole search process first. Nobody bet their reputation on him. That’s not a great place to be. Even if you’re doing your job you’re still an easy scapegoat.

Yordan grounds out 3-1
Altuve pops to SS
Quick 10-pitch inning for the Astros. No score.
I was all for the Espada promotion. At the time, coming off winning a WS, it seemed best for continuity’s sake and he had earned the opportunity. He always impressed me when they did bench coach interviews. However, just a month into the 2023 season, I started having my doubts. He has cost this team a number of victories with his decision making during games and leaves much to be desired regarding his line-ups; which teeter between haphazard and randomness.
Espada is consistently outmanaged and routinely makes absurd decisions. He’s a poor strategist and manager of the bullpen. His lineups often seem random and without thought.
Cole makes a catch up against the LF wall.
