Astros @ Angels, September 4, 2020

Inability to execute.

2 terrible swings from Reddick.

Well the 1st swing was ok. It was just 18 inches away from the baseball.

Reddick just wants to go home.

3 awful swings.

Carved the fuck up.

Diaz stranded on second in the 7th.

Bases loaded 1 out in the 8th.

Ghost runners in the 10th and 11th don’t sniff 3rd.

Astros now with 30 individual LOB. 30. In nine spots in the order.

3 for 24 with risp.

Ballgame.

Fucking wasted chances.

That’s depressing

What a shitass waste of 4+ hours of a night.

This team wastes SO many at bats. It’s fucking infuriating.

At least the A’s got throttled.

Ok, I have tried to stay quiet about this, but it drives me nuts. You are charging a guy with a LOB if he does not drive in a runner from first. That may be technically LOB, but a hitter would have to get a double (if the baserunner is fast), triple, or home run to drive in the runner on first. Not a realistic or fair criticism of a hitter at any level. LOB RISP is fair.

No one stat tells a complete story. I present individual LOB because it speaks to the number of opportunities. If a guy draws a two out walk, and the next guy flies out, that’s one team LOB. If the leadoff guy triples, and the next three guys strike out, that’s also one team LOB. But they represent two drastically different scenarios and failed opportunities. Again, no stat tells everything, just trying to add some context about missed opportunities.

It is nuts, Matt, and I cannot believe you assert this with as much baseball as you have played.

You are at the plate with two outs. Machete is on first. You hit one off the wall, but Machete stops at third. You just got an LOB the way you count them. Crazy.

In that scenario Hudson would really need to hustle not to get thrown out at first.

No, I would not get a LOB. You only get an individual LOB if you make an out with runners on base. If I get a hit or walk or otherwise reach base, no LOB is charged, even if a runner fails to score on my hit. If the next guy strikes out, he’s charged with 2 LOB, as is the team.

And it’s not me who counts them. I didn’t invent the LOB stat. I get that not all LOB are created equal, and I agree it’s not a perfect stat. It’s very circumstantial. That’s exactly my point. Again, just trying to add perspective about opportunities.

I once hit into an 8-3 groundout (there’s a story there), but to LF I’m pretty safe.

Totally unfair “stat.”
