Seriously? An error? By the Commissioner maybe. Not by the defense.

No. The Astros had 3 errors-Valdez, Correa, Machete.

That is all.

The ghost runner is scored a ā€œteam errorā€ and heā€™s an unearned run.

And my point was that the Rangers scored four runs by guys who werenā€™t made to hit their way on base.

I understood the point. I do not see ā€œteam errorā€ anywhere in the box score, and I cannot see that rule being called an ā€œerrorā€ for anyone. I understand the pitcher is not penalized if that run scores because neither he nor his team put that runner on base. The ā€œspeed the game up ruleā€ put the go-ahead 5th run on, not the Astros.

It wasnā€™t the stepping off, it was the movement of his left leg before he stepped off.

It was still pretty ticky-tack, even if technically his knee buckled a bit as he was stepping off. There was no intentional deception whatsoever.

The whole rule needs to be overhauled.

It may not be the worst-written rule in all of sports, but itā€™s way up there.

I did not see a closeup because my TV picked that hitter to go out again, but on a replay from a distance, it did not look like a balk to me.

It seems to me that umpires are more inclined to reward players who try to draw a balk.

Agreed it was ticky tack, just pointing out what was called. And balk is not necessarily an attempt to deceive, itā€™s basically any illegal action by a pitcher when a runner on base.

And I think the problem is with the enforcement of the rule. Itā€™s simply too arbitrary.

100 percent agreement, Matt.

The main intent of calling a balk SHOULD BE attempting to deceive the runner(s) in an attempt to pick them off. Not ā€œhis knee wiggled a little bit!ā€ as he was stepping off the rubberā€¦

The hell of it is, most of the balk rules were put into place to try to remove ambiguity and not make the umpire judge intentā€¦ā€œsorry, canā€™t say you were just wiggling your kneeā€¦drop the ball? nope, canā€™t say it slippedā€¦didnā€™t deliver the pitch? sorry you caught a spike and tripped, but thereā€™s no gray areaā€ā€¦but itā€™s turned into one big gray area.

Amazing that a guy who missed so many calls at the plate was eagle eyed enough to see that 65 feet away.

I thought the third base umpire made the call.

Facts have no place here.

I thought it was the HPU, but maybe not. He certainly emphatically called time and pointed at the plate.

You are correct. Whichever dickholster Ranger was on third pointed to him and applauded when he made the call.
