You’re welcome. It’s a new spot that opened in 2022. Its address is on Main Street, but it’s located near Walker and Travis. They are only open Monday through Friday.

I’m eager to hear how Vieng Thai is. My wife and I may have to try it depending on your review.

I don’t eat Thai very often, and what I recall is of gelatinous glops of something called pad Thai. I have been to street and kitchen, and like the green curry at Khun Kay. I used to like it better when it was the Golden Room and the rice was molded into the shape of Texas.

The best meal I’ve had in the last year was at Tatemo. They included some kind of ant on one of the dishes. It’s probably remarkable in the telling, but was completely unremarkable in the eating.

My car needs new tires.

Ever tried “larb”? Ridiculous name, delicious dish. Easy to make at home too.

Larb is gooder’n hell, especially duck larb.

And I’m a Hankook man, all the way down the line.

I’ve had really good luck with Toyo all-terrain truck tires, if that ever applies to anyone here

Haven’t tried larb with duck, so that’s now on the list. Venison/wild pig/lamb/beef - or some combination of - is what I’ve traditionally used

I spent a summer as an exchange student in The Netherlands.

The only ethnic food was Indonesian. The Dutch readily admitted that if you wanted authentic Dutch cuisine it was best to stick to the spoils of empire.

Of course there were Italian places on every street.

That’s like the old joke about the British Empire: “conquers the known world in search of spices…uses none of them”

We used to go to Vieng Thai a lot when we lived off 290. It was always delicious, but it’s probably been ten years since we’ve been there. I remember one time the service took forever and some of the customers were getting testy. It seemed like the staff were all working one step closer to front of house than they were used to. Busboys as waiters, cooks as busboys, everyone just trying to hold it together. I’ve always wondered if there was a wait staff walkout that day or something. The meal was still fantastic.

I miss that place. A Mexican restaurant, a Thai restaurant, a tire & rim shop and a Pentecostal church all in the same little strip. Gotta love it.

Speaking of the Westheimer/Chimney Rock area…did any of yall ever go to the Reggae Cafe? Was in the same stripcenter as Sun and Ski Sports.

I don’t remember that one. There was a Caribbean restaurant on Morningside in the Village, right near the Ginger Man. I don’t remember the name, but it was pretty good. It was the only restaurant my mother would drive into Houston for.

It was there for 10 years or so at least from the early 90’s on. Amazingly good jerk chicken/goat, and the chef was about 6’5", with the toque about 7’. I saw him take it off once and the dreds just flowed out from under it.

Spicy as hell, the bottles of Red Stripe were a necessity.

Couple of blocks down Westheimer was the best, maybe only, good General Joe’s on earth. They had the all-you-can-eat Mongolian BBQ station in the middle of the dining area (load up your bowl with whatever you want, hand it to them, and they fry it right then and there). It was quite popular with the HS athletes. One time we’re there, and our buddy (DT/LT, weight room fanatic) goes to get his 3rd bowl. Kid at the table behind us kinda whispers with not a little bit of awe: “daddy…he’s going back again

Good call, El Hidalguense is a great place for lump, speaking of lump. I don’t know whether they consider it birria or not, but that is a fantastic option. Chivo, too, if I recall correctly. And I think it’s all available every day, not just weekends like a lot of places that do cabrito.

When I hear “lump” in food discussions, I think of crab meat. What the hell are yall talking about?

Échate un vistazo pa’rriba, ahuevao.

Also, it always makes me thing of that silly song by the band whose bass player plays with two strings.
