2025 offseason

I say we pay Schwarber whatever he wants in the offseason. And no, I don’t give a damn where he plays on defense.

Well, that’s fortunate because he doesn’t play defense.

Unfortunately that position is already filled.

Grammatically, you are absolutely correct. Monty Python, however, says:

Thank you for knowing that

Pearson is 29, former top prospect. Spent time with the Blue Jays and Cubs with a career 5.17 ERA in 156 innings. He does throw hard, average velo is 97.6. The typical “we can fix him” signing

Love this shit! With Stros track record I’ll call this a great move even if it doesn’t end up being one. I’m going to say he was a top 50 MLB prospect once upon a time.

ETA: We ought to have room for one more of these type moves. Currently I’d say only TB and LAD are in the same league in terms of teams that have shown they can show a pitcher “this is the way” and make him better. When you couple that with chances of getting an opportunity to actual show it in '26 and cash in via FAgency a year or two later, I think the Astros offer the best total package of those three teams.

Reminds me of them grabbing Brandon Walter as a minor league FA right before the 2024 season ended. Good to jump on these reclamation project guys early.

If the scouts, coaches, and the nerd cave like him, why not?

I’d throw the Brewers in there as well but absolutely my same feelings as well. No risk and formally as high as number 7 prospect in 2020, he obviously has arm talent and just hasn’t been able to put it together. For what it’s worth, he put up a 2.73 in 26 innings for the cubs in 24, small sample size of course but there could be something in there

Can you imagine how excited this guy must be? Picked up in October, gets to work the whole off-season with this staff. He must be thinking that he is going to be the next Charlie Morton.

I love this signing. Pearson was super exciting when he first came up with the Jays a few years ago. He has a really interesting and potentially formidable presence/fastball.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck

Not at all what I needed to hear.

How the hell to the Pirates of all people poach this guy?

He’s only half of the Astros’ pitching tandem so it’s not like all is lost, but some is lost, and this is not a team that can afford to lose much.

Maybe wants to work with Skenes. Although it’s not clear how you could make him better than he already is.

Their manager Don Kelly was the Astros first base coach in 2019, which was the year Murphy was the org’s minor league pitching coordinator - probably familiar with each other.

But, yeah, big fuck.

Also, Strom was the Pirates’ assistant pitching coach this past year. He isn’t returning but he probably put them in touch with his old protege.

I remember when Strom retired to live on his ranch in Arizona. That’s been a while.

Again, fuuuuuuuuuuck. Astros senior director of player development & performance science Jacob Buffa is leaving for St. Louis.
