2025 MLB Draft

That’s good news.

Saw yesterday that Nick Monistere from Southern Miss signed for 397.5K Slot value was 594.5K, so there is $197K freed up.

Callis reports Frey signed for $1M (or technically $997,500 excluding the $2500 contingency bonus that doesn’t count toward the pool). Roughly $200k over slot. Also confirms Neyens signing at slot as previously reported.

Cool local note - Astros signed August Cuneo as an UDFA. Cuneo plays for Petaluma High School, which is in southern Sonoma County and maybe thirty minutes from Napa:

ETA - He’s a catcher with a slash line of .468/.537/.696, 3 HR, 9 doubles and 35 RBI.

I read he entered the year with no college offers. Impressive climb!

Very!!

Astros announced the signings of all picks except the 19th rounder McLaughlin. BA’s signings tracker has the bonuses. Based on some very quick math I think they’ve maxed out their pool plus 5%, but I’ve never been good with arithmetic. Also a couple more UDFAs I don’t think I’d seen reported before. Cuneo and Petrovitch are young for the class (as is draftee Arroyos). Great to have some more youth in the system.

MLB’s draft tracker has the bonuses plus what the value of the pick was so you can see the gap.

My rough math shows they have gone over by $330,100 and the 5% is $359,080. UDFA bonuses can also count against the pool if they go over $150K. I haven’t seen any of those reported.

The college hitters from the ‘25 draft class are starting to make their way into games. As promised, they’ve started 3rd rounder Ethan Frey in centerfield despite him only ever appearing at the corners for LSU (and those appearances were rare enough; he was mostly the DH). I can’t speak to the defense but he’s had a nice little start over four games at the plate, hitting .385 with four walks and just two strikeouts.

Frey is the one I have the most irrational confidence in from the whole draft class. His lack of playing time his first two years at LSU and his lack of an everyday role in the field hurt his draft stock more than he really deserved, imo, and made him a potential bargain in the third round.

He’s my know-nothing irrational favorite draft pick. If he has the wheels and arm to play RF that opens up some possibilities. He’s huge and getting huger, so I don’t really see how he can stick in CF

At one point he had a labrum problem. I’m assuming he made it back from that but players don’t always come back from that type injury 100 or even close to it. Might be tough to be a regular in right field without it.
