What is the sound of one hand clapping for this post?
Oh, no. That’s just the sound of Ray whacking off in the Video Game thread next door.
Well he did spend 4 hours diagramming how he would do it.
Snell to Dodgers
5/$182M, just in case anyone was wondering what the market rate for Framber would be before we trade him
Manfred has a problem. It’s not good that the Yankees and Dodgers can drive salaries to the point where other teams will be bankrupted if they try to keep up. Using the other 28 teams as farm clubs for those two is not a good long-term strategy.
If Manfred can complete this move to a nationally bundled media rights deal - AND have the revenues evenly distributed - I’ll take back a lot of the things I’ve said about him.
This will never happen
The Yankees and Dodgers will never allow it.
Nor should they, imo. I get that the league needs a certain level of parity for the game to be enjoyable, but if other teams want more revenue, they should try earning it.

That’s an absurd position, IMO. To expect the Milwaukee Brewers to have the same sources of income as the New York Yankees is simply a ridiculously unrealistic expectation. I’m not clamoring for a salary cap or revenue sharing, but this is the natural and inevitable course of the system they have in place, and the disparity of talent will continue to grow as a result. It is not sustainable, but the current owners seem fine with that. It’s their toy, they can play with it how they like.
And in other news … our new solution for 1B … Luis Castro.

I don’t expect them to have the same resources. The Brewers have done a good job competing as a small market team. I’m just sick to death of the A’s and Pirates and Marlins and other “small market” teams crying poor while they collect revenue sharing dollars but refuse to invest those dollars in major league talent. If they want to overhaul the rev sharing system to require every penny be spent on MLB player salaries, I’m all for it. Have the money go to an MLB-controlled fund to reimburse teams for adding talent. The owners who pocket the money and steer their teams into the cellar year after year get no sympathy from me.
Houston isn’t a market like New York or LA either, but Crane invests in the team, and he makes money when they win games. Funny how that works.

Of course not. I don’t think ill end up having to say nice things about Manfred.

They don’t need to or want to. The owners of those clubs make $$ hand over fist, which, I suspect is the goal of their business ownership. They are running an entertainment business and doing it well. Their customers continue to generate a revenue stream that is satisfactory to them. And, satisfactory to the other franchise owners in their entertainment franchise collective.

There are problems at both ends of the payroll spectrum, to be sure. The rich teams can be rich, and are rich enough to endure the penalty for being too rich. The “poor” teams can be poor, and there is no penalty for being too poor.

It would make more sense to just implement a salary floor like the NFL, NBA, and NHL all already have. Of course, the owners probably wouldn’t approve that either.
The owners made clear they would only do a salary floor with a salary cap.
I don’t expect them to have the same resources.
Then how do you expect them to earn more revenue? I get the part about reinvesting, but your argument is essentially “if poor people don’t want to be poor and want to compete with Elon Musk, they just need to earn more money”. It’s simply not a level playing field, no matter how egalitarian we all want the league to be.
And the small market owners pocket the revenue sharing because they care about money, not winning. They are not fans. They are fine with the Yankees and Dodgers dominating, it’s us the fans who want our teams to win. That’s the reality we have to live with.
The owners made clear they would only do a salary floor with a salary cap.
A floor also wouldn’t fix a whole lot. The Marlins would just sign a Carlos Santana for 1 year at 20 million every year to reach the floor. This is what often happens in the NBA
